Handy Home Improvement Tips Everyone Can Use

You should consider your home as one of your most important assets. We spend a lot of time in our homes, so it is important to keep them up-to-date and well-maintained in order to feel positively about them.

Many people may see dark paneling in their rooms as a curse. However, it can be really simple to spice up your panels to make them suitable and stylish. Lightly sand your panels and paint over it with a primer. Then just apply a coat of paint in the color of your choice. This will give new life to your room as well as your dark paneling.

If you have a lot of dirt in your backyard or garden, you can easily make your own pathways using pavers and stones. You don’t need to use any concrete, just lay your stones in a nice design or pattern in the area you need it to cover. This can provide a nice and balanced look to your garden, as well as keeping your shoes dirt free.

If you have a small bathroom and not enough space to store your items, you can easily create some space yourself. Buy some wooden shelves and install them on your bathroom wall. Display your lotions, perfumes and other beauty items on the shelves as well as your smaller towels or toilet paper rolls. This will not only give your bathroom a decorative boost, it will also organize it.

To save on your energy bill, try changing your light bulbs. Compact fluorescent light bulbs and LED light bulbs cost more than regular light bulbs, but use less energy to light your home and last longer. You should see returns on your monthly energy bill in no time after replacing all of the normal bulbs in your home with these.

Things like the downspouts, gutters and chimneys are often forgotten around the home. Make sure to inspect these parts of your home so you can make necessary repairs. If not cleaned regularly, chimneys can ignite, and plugged downspouts and gutters can result in water damage.

Childproofing your home can have a lot of great long- term effects. Your child will grow up much healthier if you make sure that your home is safe from harmful gases and contaminating microscopic particles. Such steps to keep your child safe should begin with conception and not after your baby is born.

If you have kids, you know that they like to color and leave their coloring books and crayons lying around. You can simply organize them with a dish drying rack. Purchase a dish drying rack and stack your kid’s coloring books between the dish prongs and insert the crayons or markers into the utensil caddy space.

Look for the line of nails! If you need to snug up a protruding piece of paneling or drywall you can normally tell where to add a new nail or screw just by closely observing the surface of the panel. It was installed by nailing it to the underlying wall studs and evidence of those studs will likely still be visible.

Do you want to gain a little closet or floor space in your next home improvement project? Relocate your water heater to your attic! Modern water heaters are produced in efficient, reliable “low-boy” designs that you can tuck safely between your ceiling and your roof. This allows you to gain a little extra storage space.

If you are working on your own home improvement project involving laying brick, make sure you use brick ties in sufficient quantity. Brick ties are metal clips used to anchor bricks to the wall structure (wood studs or what have you) behind them. Many do-it-yourself types are seduced by the apparent sturdiness of bricks and fail to realize that they must be secured to the wall via brick ties.

For a unique and highly on-trend look, consider hanging flocked wallpaper on a large focal wall or in the main living area of your home or apartment. This type of wall covering adds texture, color, and style to any room, but is especially ideal for homes without children or in master bedrooms.

Although it can be tempting to continually put off home repairs, or hire a professional to do simple repair work and, in doing so, rack up a costly bill, most people are amazed to discover how easily and readily they are able to do basic home repair work and maintenance themselves.…

Startup Gamers Presents: Ten Candles

Welcome to our very first actual play! Dylan, Allie, and I play a game of Ten Candles run by the game’s designer, Stephen Dewey! Stephen was nice enough to come to my home, teach us how to play the game, and run an awesome session for us! If you want to know more about the game and character creation we have an episode devoted to that here. This episode gets right to the story and tragic horror you will find when play Ten Candles!

The Startup Gamers Podcast is a talk radio show from Tabletop Torch. It’s designed to give independent game designers invaluable information and insight into the design process while at the same time showcasing great new up-and-coming games!

“This is no survival horror game, where the question is “will you die?” It’s not about whether the characters fall to the darkness or emerge as survivors. There are no survivors. Not here. Instead, it provides the stage upon which you will act out the final moments in the lives of a group of people destined to die; to see them pushed to the very brink of terror, madness, and sorrow. It is a game of loss, yes, but it is also a game of hope.

That hope will live on, even in the end. But hope can be lost when those who guard it are pushed to that edge. It is in those moments that the darkness around becomes the darknesswithin, and that is when They have truly won.”…

Cones of Dunshire: A Startup Gamers Podcast

In episode two of the Startup Gamers podcast Patrick talks to Morgan Dontanville of Mayfair Games about a variety of subjects ranging from game design, Catan, and Cones of Dunshire. For those not in the know, Cones of Dunshire first appeared on the popular television series Parks & Recreation. Ben Wyatt (played by Adam Scott) created the game during a week off from work. The end result was an ambitious game filled with passion and rules — lots of them. One of the mechanics of the game is that you roll dice to find out how many dice to roll. Morgan explains how it works along with some of the other crazy rules that were dreamed up for this game.

The producers of the show loved the idea so much that they decided to revisit it and that’s when Morgan realized that an actual, playable ruleset was in order. Listen in to hear all about it!

From the Kickstarter:

“Encouraged by the success of the first edition of the game, Cone Hiill Games (makers of fine wood and wrought-iron amusements) want to produce the largest, most impressive version of the game possible. This wonderful, deluxe version of the game will include the spectacular new characters developed for the very special version of the game played in Indianapolis at the Gen Con 2014 charity event.”
